Alexander

“Alexander” is a movie that tells the story of Alexander the Great; the king of Macedonia who expanded his empire across parts of Asia and also into Persia. The film stars Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, and Val Kilmer. This 2004 film did not do too tell with the box offices here in the United States and actually did better overseas. Many believe it was because of the nature of the film and some of the content that was addressed in it.

The movie shows the life of Alexander the Great and the personal obstacles he had to face in order to become the ruler he was. Unlike most conquerors, Alexander was seen to many as a kind man. He often allowed the people that he conquered to live the same lives that they used to live and did not make them into slaves. Many of his men were against this but it still allowed him to stand out above all other rulers, which included his late father, Phillip II. Along with living up to what his father had done, Alexander also had to please his mother and her desire for Alexander to be the rightful heir to the Macedonian kingdom. The movie also shows the relationship between Alexander and his best male friend, which historically was also his lover.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this film as much as I did but it was very interesting. It actually made history seem interesting. I was never aware that, within the Ancient Greek world, it was very common for men to engage in sexual relationships with other men and have it seen as the norm rather than labeling it as homosexuality (that term did not even exist during that time). Also the sex scene with Farrell and Rosario Dawson was pretty intense and gave the movie a bit of an extra kick.
