Meet the Spartans

A comedy that should have fallen down its own

If you enjoyed watching "300," make sure you do not rent "Meet the Spartans," a rip-off of the dramatic action flick. While the movie does have a lot of popular culture references, it falls flat when trying to cleverly joke about celebrities.

Leonidas, played by Sean Maguire, is a warrior trained from a young age to defend his country. In his training, he comes across many challenges, one including having to fight against a giant penguin from the movie, "Happy Feet." His wife, Queen Margo, is a provocative and promiscuous leading lady, played by Carmen Electra. Most of the humor surrounding Electra is sexually influenced, and after an hour of the same jokes it gets kind of dull. While she is a beautiful woman, that's really all she has to offer in this role. Kevin Sorbo, former television Hercules, fits right in as a muscular warrior trying to help his leader. His role pokes fun at the seriousness of the plot, which makes his character the only likeable one to watch.

The main theme of the movie is the "Pit-of-Death," which stems from a few scenes from "300." If Leonidas doesn't like one of the many celebrities that come to his land, he pushes them down the pit. Some of the only funny scenes are watching the most annoying celebrities around get thrown into the pit, but only a few of the incidents are actually laughable.

If you are looking for a comedy, this is not the movie to rent. If you are looking for satire or good writing in a movie, this is not the one for you. The only benefit of the movie was watching celebrity impersonators poke fun for a few minutes. Overall, this movie is a waste of time and a disgrace to comedies. I suppose this can be expected, considering most of the DVD's cover is taken up with Carmen Electra's busty outfit.

The movie was nominated for some awards in 2009. The "Razzie" awards honor some of the worst movies of the year, and "Meet the Spartans" is amongst the other candidates. At least something good could come out of this film.
