Armageddon

Preposterous plan to blow up asteroid derail otherwise likely disaster film

Armageddon is a 1998 over-exaggerated disaster film starring Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton and Ben Affleck. It was directed by Michael Bay and released under Touchstone Pictures.

In the movie, NASA is initially unaware of the destruction that is on its way to Earth. This is until meteoroids destroy the Space Shuttle Atlantis and causd severe damage to New York City. This is when NASA discovers an asteroid that is headed directly for Earth. Upon impact, the asteroid is expected to completely destroy all life on the planet. In order to stop it, top NASA officials seek out the help from an oil driller named Harry Stamper (played by Willis) and his crew to land on the asteroid, drill a nuclear bomb in the center, and activate it in order to save the world. In a matter of days, Harry and his crew are trained on how to handle being in space and are sent off to save all humanity.

Okay first off, we are all aware that this movie was a tad bit unrealistic. Not the part about an asteroid destroying most of the Earth; this is actually what some scientists claim ended life for the dinosaurs. It's just how the movie went about it. Going in a space shuttle and being slingshot around the moon to land on a moving asteroid? When the movie first came out I was too young to realize that this was a bit over the top.

Another aspect to the movie that didn't work too well was Liv Tyler. She is a beautiful woman, but I barely realized she was there. I can't remember anything she said but I know her character's purpose was made to make the movie a bit more touching. Weirdly enough that is what had men tearing up. A close male friend of mine stated that movie was "a soap opera, but for men!" Well, as long as the public eats it up, I suppose that is what matters the most.
