Superman Returns
The "Superman" franchise is one that will possibly never die. It was always hard to think of a "Superman" movie without the late Christopher Reeves. Even though there is no one that could ever replace him or the original Superman movies, "Superman Returns" did a very good job, in my opinion. The movie was released in 2006 and was directed by Bryan Singer. It stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and James Marsden.
The movie takes place several years after Superman (Brandon Routh) leaves Earth to find what he thought was the remainder of his home planet Krypton. During his time away, Lois Lane gets engaged and has a child as she continues her work with the Daily Planet. Around this time, Lex Luthor has married an old widow and inherited her fortunes after her death. This allows him to continue his plot of taking over the United States. Luthor steals a crystal from the Fortress of Solitude and uses it to begin his evil plan. It is up to Superman to foil him along with readjusting to a world where some have forgotten about the importance of Superman.
A lot of critics did not like the film but I enjoyed it. It wasn't like the film was trying to be different from the original; in fact, it was loosely inspired by those films. Routh resembled Reeves so much that I often forgot that they were two different people. He didn't over-do the part; he played Superman the way that it should have been played. Promotions for the film should have been done better because it deserved much more hype. I guess my only complaint was that I didn't get enough Superman in the film. I'm really hoping that there is a sequel in the works.
