A.I.

A child-like android is the first of his kind to have the ability to love his human owners.

“A.I. Artifical Intelligence” is a wonderfully vibrant and inventive 2001 film that gives viewers another insight into what the future will be like as humanity undergoes technological advances. Directed, co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film was a guaranteed fantastic science fiction knockout. Set in the 22nd century, the film tells the story of David (Haley Joel Osment) a young boy who is really a one of a kind android who was built with the ability to love.

The film starts off revealing how the world has become a victim of Global Warming which led to world-wide ecological disasters. These disasters have caused a drastic decline in human population. Therefore humanity has turned to creating “mechas,” androids with the ability to have human-like thoughts and emotions, in an attempt to maintain civilization. However, David was the only advanced prototype created by Cybertronics company to have the ability to “feel” love for humans. The company decides to test their latest creation by giving the child to one of their workers. David is given to Henry Swinton (Sam Robards) and Monica (Frances O'Connor), his wife, who have a son suffering from a rare disease. Shortly after David arrives the Swinton's son is cured and is able to come back home. A sibling rivalry starts between the two boys and when an accident occurs, David is forced to be sent back to Cybertronics where he will be destroyed. Monica has formed feelings towards David and decides to let him run away instead. From then on, David goes on a journey to find a way to become a real boy so Monica will love him.
