What else do I have to say but?FLASH! AHH AHH and everybody knows what I'msaying or actually singing. The problem is the song is more popular thanthe actual movie, starring Sam Jones, as Flash; Melody Anderson, as DaleArden; Topol, as Dr. Hans Zarkov; Timothy Dalton, as Prince Baron; and, ofcourse, Max Von Sydow, as Emperor Ming, The Merciless. Let's face it...this was a really stupid movie with bad acting, but for some reason, Iabsolutely love this movie. I always have and I always will, in fact, Ihope they make a sequel to it.
The story is simple enough -- the universe is run by this emperor namedMing, The Merciless, and he is exactly as his name says - merciless. Oneday, he gets bored and decides to destroy a planet just for the fun of it.The problem is the planet he chooses just happens to be earth. Ming startsby causing all of these natural disasters like earthquakes and hail thatturns into fire and all types of nasty little intergalactic tricks. NowI'll introduce you to our hero, Mr. Flash Gordon, Quarterback for the NewYork Jets, and Dale Arden (I have no idea what she does). Their plane goesdown due to some tomfoolery at the hands of Emperor Ming. It just sohappens that their plane crashes in the back yard of a crazy scientist, Dr.Hans Zarkov, who was fired from NASA because he was conjuring crazy ideasof earth being attacked from some unknown alien forces. As luck would haveit, he was secretly building a rocket ship to go to space and stop theattack. Well, to make a long story short, Dr. Zarkov kidnaps Flash andDale and they enter outer space to stop Emperor Ming's evil plan, save theearth, and bring peace to the universe. He meets a whole lot of bad guysalong the way, kills them, and he makes some good friends too, includingEmperor Ming's daughter (who's pretty hot).
Some of the best things about this movie were the soundtrack, performed byQueen, and how this movie just blatantly refuses to take itself seriously.Every time I see this movie, I'm reminded of a time when movies could bemade just for fun. They did the best they could with the money they hadand, even though the special effects weren't too spiffy, they were stillgreat.
Everyone has one special movie that when you tell someone you liked it, theperson looks at you like you're crazy. Flash Gordon is mine and I know I'mnot alone on this. One more thing, if you know where I can get the whiteT-shirt that Flash wears, let me know cause I've been looking for it foryears!
