Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle

Three Jeers for Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu who star in a weaker version of the original with less plot and less fun.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle left me wondering which came first--the script or the soundtrack. It appears that Drew Barrymore and Co. sat down and first decided which popular tunes of the past they wanted to cram into this, their second effort at a big screen version of the cheesy 70s television show. Who needs a decent plot and script when you have a hip soundtrack plus nearly two hours of Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Demi Moore? At least that's what they'd like the audience to think.

This time around Dylan (Barrymore), Alex (Liu,) and Natalie's (Diaz) adventure begins in Mongolia where they must rescue a federal marshal, who was kidnapped because he wears a special ring when coupled with another identical ring (worn by Bruce Willis in a strange cameo) contains the key to decoding the names of everyone in the witness protection program. That includes Dylan, who's real name is actually Helen Zass (got to love that ass humor) , being protected by a crazy ex she turned in for murder...who gets out of prision and surprise, surprise gets a hold of the rings.

There's really too many bizarre and random plot twists to explain. Basically the girls do everything they did in the first one--dress up in disguises (again as men and dancers in a club), kick some butt (in some ridiculous fight scenes), and of course take time away from the little bit of plot there actually is to randomly dance in unison to the previously mentioned music (MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This).

The movie offers up celebrity cameos aplenty. Demi Moore is thrown in as former-Angel gone bad, Madison Lee, who appears at the beginning of the movie then disappears for what seems like an eternity. She was the perfect choice for the role, which was actually written for her. Cripen Glover makes a creepy but welcome return as the thin man with a strange hair fetish. Luke Wilson and Matt LeBlanc are also back as Natalie and Alex's love interests. Wilson's brother Owen also makes an odd appearance as does Jackass' Chris Pontias and John Cleese.

There's just too much going on in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. There's just too little of it that makes any sense as a whole- jumping out of airplanes, racing dirtbikes, starting fires, flashbacks, and a new Bosley, Bernie Mac. He is a welcome addition, explained well enough to make it work within the story (well as good as anything else in this all-over-the place piece of eye-candy anyway).

Regardless, it's still fun...not nearly as much as the original, but it has a few good laughs, a lot of action, and proves that um...well Girls Just Want To Have Fun. I just wanted to run home and watch the original.
