All About Eve
Bette Davis lights up the screen in "All About Eve" as the feisty Margo
Channing, a veteran stage actress and Broadway darling. No one can touch
her style until the sweet and unassuming Eve (played by Anne Baxter) comes
onto the scene.
Way before Dynasty, this is where cattiness was born. This 1950 film
features brilliant acting from both Baxter and Davis, as friends turned
acting rivals, and it also stars a young unknown named, Marilyn Monroe.
Add to that, the phenomenal gowns worn by Bette Davis, the glamorous
ambience and classic lines such as "Fasten your seatbelts, it's gonna be a
bumpy night" and you've got yourself a true classic movie.
Never before has a film delved so deep into the mind games played by the
actresses trying to climb their way up the ladder and the actresses trying
not to slip down. This movie is truly a treat for those who enjoy the
glamorous heyday of Hollywood and those who love films that analyze the
human psyche.
If you don't believe me, check out the stats. "All About Eve" was
nominated for an outstanding 14 Academy Awards, including two nominations
for Best Actress (for Baxter and Davis, respectively) and a nomination for
Best Picture. The movie walked away with six statues for Best Actress
(Davis), Best Picture, Best Director (Joseph Mankiewicz), Best Supporting
Actor (the also brilliant George Sanders), Best Writing (Screenplay), Best
Costumes in a Black & White Film and Best Sound Recording.
"All About Eve" is the culmination of outstanding acting, sumptuous
costumes and settings, and a wonderful script. It is personally one of my
all-time favorite films and likely to become one of yours too.
