Spongebob Squarepants - The Seascape Capers

A teacher is a bit disappointed with her first experience with Sponge Bob.

I hesitate to admit this, but I must be the only Pre-K teacher who has not seen SpongeBob Square Pants in action. I often heard his praises from the four year olds I teach, but I never saw the television show that caused their adoration.

I must admit I was disappointed. Basically SpongeBob is an underwater creature. The Seascape Capers is promoted as a nautical nonsense adventure, and indeed it is just that- a typical cartoon filled with nonsense. There are five individual segments, but none of them have any apparent educational value, but that did not stop my students from enjoying them. They were enthralled; probably by the colorful characters and the constant action. There are no thinking skills required to watch this video- similar to The Three Stooges of my era. Also, I was not pleased that all the characters seem to scream a lot, not really a trait I want copied.

All in all, as a teacher and a parent, I would prefer my children watch a video which will both entertain them and teach them at the same time. But obviously, I must concede that for reasons far beyond those understood by mortal adults, SpongeBob Squarepants has a following that cannot be denied-or understood.
