My Fair Lady
The fantastically elegant Audrey Hepburn dazzles in the classic musical
masterpiece that chronicles the evolution of a flower vendor into an
English lady.
Hepburn plays Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower girl who sells flowers all
day for pennies in London. On a fateful night, she comes across the dashing
Professor Henry Higgins, a top-rate phoneticist who has mastered the
English language. He is appalled at the ghetto language that comes from
Eliza's mouth and sees in her a challenge. He proudly proclaims that he can
turn this hoodlum into a lady in six months- so much so that he can make
her pass for a duchess at the upcoming Embassy Ball. And so the challenge
begins...
Henry is joined in his efforts by the equally, if not more charming
Colonel Hugh Pickering (played by Wilfrid Hyde-White),who is there mainly
to make sure that Henry doesn't kill the stubborn Miss Doolittle. It seems
highly unlikely that Eliza can change from a street urchin to a grand dame
in such a short period of time and fool the royalty that will be at the
ball, but Henry is sure of his talents. He refuses to give up and she sees
a new future. Will Eliza ever become a "fair lady"?
The winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor
(Rex Harrison), Best Music-Adaptation or Treatment, and Best Costume
Design- Color (Cecil Beaton), My Fair Lady is a wonderful movie as well as
a cinematic legend. Mr. Cecil Beaton creates unforgettable, sumptuous
costumes and George Cukor, who won for Best Director, puts together a
flawless picture, composed of flawless actors. The music is great and the
story is heart-warming and humorous. A satisfying movie musical for both
men and women alike, My Fair Lady is a legend that never grows old.
