The Kennedys

An in-depth look at America's royal family.

PBS' American Experience four-hour documentary on the Kennedys shows the step-by-step formation of the political powerhouse we recognize today. It chronicle's father Joseph Kennedy's rise to power and the painstaking measures he took to guarantee a son of his would be in the White House. The youth of JFK, RFK and their numerous siblings are looked at, including the tragic deaths of Joe, Jr. and Kathleen in plane crashes.

The political grooming of the Kennedy men is also scrutinized. In-depth information about the three Kennedy presidential races - those of John, Robert and Edward Kennedy, respectively, reveals the intense work and dedication involved in securing a presidency. Tragically, fate would intervene, erasing the possibilities.

The murders of John and Robert Kennedy, and the car accident that left a woman dead, robbed all three brothers of their chance to serve a four-year term as a United States President. The events leading to, and following, each tragedy are explained and show the destruction of a piece of the Kennedy empire. Other scandals such as Joe Sr.'s affair with Gloria Swanson and John's affair with mafia-linked Judith Campbell are also included. Also shown, is the tight Kennedy bond and how the family unites time and again to overcome grief and stay the strong family unit they have always been.

The major factor that sets this documentary apart and validates it is the number of personal interviews. Judith Campbell Exner, Cesar Chavez, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Edward Kennedy all speak of their involvement with the Kennedy legacy. People who worked on campaigns, spent time with the Kennedys and saw how they really were contributed to this documentary. Only the people who knew JFK and RFK the best - their brother, RFK's children, their political counterparts and their friends know the special and true details and share them in this work.

If you truly want to know who the Kennedys were, and are, this documentary is definitely for you.
