There's no way out of it, no matter where I turn, or how much I try to avoid it, I am, and will always be, a hopeless romantic. If you don't think you are, or don't believe in fate working its unique and wonderful magic, you better not watch While You Were Sleeping. You just might change your tune in all that is romantic and adorably charming, when it comes to matters of the heart. Of course, if that is what you're looking for, you will be delightfully smothered with happiness by the story line and cast of While You Were Sleeping.
When I feel like the romance button is on hold, or think, "that's it, there's no one for me", I slide in the DVD of While You Were Sleeping, and just chill out and think, someday, somewhere, I'll have that too. I'm not saying that I'm looking for a comatose man to fantasize about, and then fall in love with his brother, but love works in very strange and complicated ways. So, the way I look at it- never doubt where your truest love might show up, it could even happen tomorrow.
Lucy (Sandra Bullock) a bright, resourceful, wonderfully witty and spunky young woman whose heart overflows with kindness and compassion, is sadly without love and longing for that kind of companionship. Lucy's life is pretty much all work, and since her father passed away, things just don't appear so remarkable in her life at the present time. With the holidays approaching, Lucy once again will have to work, since she is the only one who doesn't have any impending plans.
Lucy works for the Transit Authority and while she sells tokens, she's basically just watching the world go by, and the people who she feels are living their lives. She always sees a life that she would like to be a part of, which includes a husband who would take her on that all important trip to Florence, one she has been dreaming about for years. Lately, Lucy's one high point in her day is waiting to see a regular customer, Peter (Peter Gallagher), a handsome and well dressed man, who Lucy has a crush on, and has placed high on the pedestal, making him the ideal man in her mind.
One amazing and hectic day changed Lucy's life forever. She saw Peter get mugged and fall onto the tracks, where an oncoming train was moments away. Lucy, without a second thought, jumped onto the tracks and pulled Peter to safety, but the fall caused him to be in a coma. Lucy stayed with him at the hospital, and during a moment where Lucy thought no one could hear her, she innocently and softly spoke of marrying Peter. That someone, a nurse, tells Peter's family that Lucy not only saved their son Peter, but also is his fiancee. Before Lucy has a chance to explain the misunderstanding it's too late. Lucy is under the wing of a very happy and welcoming family.
Now that Lucy is a part of a loving family, something she hasn't had in such a long time, what is she going to do, since it is all based on a misunderstanding? Even more confusing for Lucy is that the man she has fallen in love with is not Peter, but his brother Jack ( Bill Pullman), who Lucy has been spending lots of time with, and Jack is having the same feelings for her as well. So what will become of Lucy, Jack and Peter now that Peter has awoken and has been told that Lucy is his fiancee? Many things are going to come out of this romantic and comical entanglement, more than imaginable, and will surely surprise family members. And who is responsible for all these changes? Lucy- and you will find out why this amazing and intuitive lady has affected the family in such deeply moving ways. But will it be enough when the truth finally comes out?
While You Were Sleeping, is such a mood lifter with its humor and good natured out look on life, it will make you feel terrific about who you are. Loaded with shining examples of what makes a good romantic comedy sustain over and over, is what you can expect from watching this movie.
I loved every bit of it, and I'm such a fan that when it airs on television I watch it as well. I think it is one of the most enjoyable, positive and touching romances around. The end is just precious, and perfectly romantic!
The cast is excellent and worth every moment of their time on screen. I loved Jack Warden's character and especially noted are the splendid and outragously, comical performances of Peter Boyle and Glynis Johns. Peter Gallagher was great as the baffled fiancee, who had his share of confessions to come clean about, to his family. My heart did summersaults for Bill Pullman's character, who just kept scooping out the adorable charm and made you root for him and Sandra Bullock's character, from the moment he stepped onto the screen. Sandra Bullock was sensational, and no better actress could have played the role as marvelously as she did.
I must confess one minor glitz in my review and this is in no way a pun, but can be looked at in a comical manner. The first time I watched this movie, I fell asleep. But the next day, I watched it with eyes open so wide you would have had to use some mechanical device to close them. I really love this movie, and hope there are many that share in my enthusiasm for it. If you haven't seen it, absolutely rent it!
