Malice
Surrounding us all in the most unpredictable of places lays an evil so chilling.
Malice is a sexy and mysterious thriller loaded with many twists and turns making it a roller coaster ride for your mind. Our first bitter taste of this intoxicating thrill ride comes to us in the form of a college town where a series of horrendous rapes and murders have claimed female college students, with the most recent being left for dead and in critical condition in the hospital. Andy Safian, (Bill Pullman) Dean of the college is outraged by the lack of security on campus and rips into detective Dana Harris (Bebe Neuwirth) on ways to beef up security.
Andy and Tracy (Nicole Kidman) his beautiful, vivacious, and child loving wife have almost all of their dreams becoming fulfilled. The only things missing in this apparently blissful couple's life are a family to fill their gorgeous Victorian home and the funds to keep up the renovations on it. Sadly though, Andy's wife is suffering from a medical condition that appears to only be getting worse even though she is being treated by a doctor two hours away. Tracy who is feeling the burden of bills on her shoulders doesn’t like the idea of a stranger renting a floor of their home but finally gives in to the idea to look for someone to lessen the financial strain on her and Andy.
When Andy goes to the hospital to visit his student he introduces himself to the doctor in charge, a brilliant surgeon named Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin) who just arrived in town and performed a miracle on a young patient whose life was literally in his hands. Andy realizes that Jed is an old high school acquaintance and eventually confides in him about Tracy's illness and offers him an invitation to rent out the third floor of their home. Jed accepts and Tracy, who didn’t like him the first time she met him, still has a strong dislike to Jed sharing their home with them and his presence makes her agitated and uncomfortable in a weird sort of way.
Andy's self-involvement over his student’s well being will be tested when Andy falls under suspicion for the crimes since he had contact with all the victims before their attacks. Dana believes Andy didn't commit the crimes but the only way for Andy to clear his name is with a sample of his semen.
While along in the house Tracy suffers excruciating pain that leads her to call 911 and leaves her lying in the hospital in critical condition. The doctor on call is Jed and his performance in the operating room will change Andy, Tracy and his own future in a way none of them had ever imagined.
The cunning evil of disillusioned minds, the seductiveness of lust and sex, and the masterful plan of deceit and greed, which fueled this sinister plan from the beginning, will soon rupture at an alarming pace.
I trip, stumble and fall for Bill Pullman and just have the biggest doe eyes that get wider each time I see him on screen. I especially liked him in this role for he was warm and affectionate but also was a heap of raw, built-up fighting power that made him even sexier. Alec Baldwin was pure cream in this role and was so delicious and so good that if you took in any more of his wicked ways you'd go crazy. Nicole Kidman was just astonishing and she could cripple your soul so easily with all the hate and evil stirring inside of her.
With a supporting cast that includes the supreme talent of Anne Bancroft, George C. Scott, Josef Sommer, Peter Gallagher and a famous Paltrow whose added contribution most likely was intended for a rich savory treat, which indeed worked, giving the dead solid performance created. Malice is a stunner of a movie and with such a stellar cast that I've made this one apart of my DVD collection. Disappointingly the only feature accompanying the DVD is the original trailer, but, if you are like me, you love trailers, and will watch them as an appetizer to the main course.
The eerie music by Jerry Goldsmith compliments the theme of the story very well and gave me the creeps so much that I think I have goose bump scars from it.
So let your answering machine take your calls, put your cell phone on silent mode and let your computer sleep while you enjoy cozying up to the television screen. Now you're ready to watch a great thriller that's well worth every intense and creepy minute. And if you thought the middle was getting good, wait till the ending.
