Scooby Doo (Seasons 1+2) and The Flintstones (Season 1)
Lately, there seems to be a fascination with the cartoons that we grew up with as children. Warner Brothers Video recently released two DVD box sets along that vein.
"The Flintstones, the Complete First Season," is an interesting look back at the pre-historic predecessors to "The Simpsons." When watching the series from beginning to end you can start to see a development. The most obvious is the improvement in the quality of the animation, but interesting tidbits reveal themselves. For example, Dino doesn’t enter until Episode 18. Pebbles and Bam-Bam aren’t in the entire first season. Also, the first episode was the one with Barney’s flying machine. I would have thought that a flying machine would have been brought in later as a means of pulling out of a slump and the first would have introduced the characters more.
The bonus disc contains some rarities like "The Flagstones: The Lost Pilot." Also, it includes a few short features like, "Wacky Inventions," which chronicles all of the crazy inventions used during the show, such as the airlines, the subways, etc.
The "Scooby Doo" set doesn’t have as much in the way of extras, but considering the success of the movie lately, it’s no surprise that people would want to see the television series. The jokes are corny, the plots are lacking, but people love them. The good news is that this part of the series is before they started introducing their "celebrity" guest starts and characters like Scrappy-Doo. It’s interesting to watch the series in this direction and realize that the original seems to have been better.
