Basic Instinct
When a rock star is found butchered in his home, suspicion casts its shadow on Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) an alluring, intelligent, sexually uninhibited novelist with a knack for creating works of fictional art that end up resembling real life murder cases. Questions are raised when Catherine accurately depicts with the gruesome murder of her rocker boyfriend.
Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) and his partner Gus Moran (George Dzundza) are assigned to the case. Nick is a troubled soul who has had his share of failed relationships, career misfortunes and personal addictions. Trying hard to stay clean and to get his life back on track, Nick seeks treatment through his ex lover, Dr. Beth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn), who apparently still has a weakness for Nick’s charms.
But Nick's future, sanity and perhaps even his life, is in jeopardy when he gets himself tangled up with more than just solving this case, but with the prime suspect and the fast-paced and dangerous world she surrounds herself in.
Titillating mind games, a questionable past, secrets and broken trust; who is telling the truth, and who is trying to cover it up? And who is ingenious enough to manipulate every theory and reasonable conclusion that the police have collected?
Numerous DVD extras in the special edition unrated director's cut include "Blonde Poison" documentary on the making of the film, audio commentary with director Paul Verhoeven and director of photography Jan De Bont, "Cleaning Up Basic Instinct" a montage comparing the TV version to the theatrical version, commentary with feminist critic Camille Paglia, photo gallery, and theatrical trailer. Also, as an added bonus, an ice pick pen which, of course, writes in red ink.
"Basic Instinct" is slick, playful, smart and explicitly sexual. It became one of the most talked about movies of its time and made Sharon Stone a bona fide star. Sharon took home awards for best female performance and most desirable female at the 1993 MTV Movie Awards.
"Basic Instinct" offers its audience a constant array of suspense, intrigue and mystery. A glossy combination of direction, writing, music and acting made Basic Instinct a provocative, sexy and stylish thriller. Guilty pleasure? Absolutely!
