Rosemary's Baby
A blessing from Hell.
"Rosemary's Baby" is based on the best-selling novel by Ira Levin and directed by Roman Polanski.
Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her actor husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), have moved into their lustrous New York apartment complex, complete with ample space, especially since a nursery is planned. Convenient locations are all within walking distance and, yes, two amenities that were not listed in the rental; very nosey and peculiar neighbors, Minnie Castevet (Ruth Gordon) and her husband, Roman (Sidney Blackmer), who do more than make their presence known to this young couple.
Whispering and chanting is heard during the late hours of the night with disturbing nightmares, excruciating pain and rumors of witchcraft. Diabolically evil deeds are manufactured by the Devil himself, hatched cleverly, mysteriously and unexpectedly toward a naive and loving wife and her down-on-his-luck, but over-zealous husband.
DVD extras include a widescreen version enhanced for 16:9 TVs, Dolby digital, English subtitles (for the deaf and hard of hearing), interactive menus, scene selection, exclusive retrospective interviews with: Roman Polanski, director; Robert Evans, production executive; Richard Sylbert, production designer, "making of featurette."
Ruth Gordon took home the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, a role that cannot be reinvented. It was amazing and I haven't seen anything quite like it since. The entire cast of "Rosemary's Baby" is one of the finest and most well-executed examples of how performers take you into their world and make the unimaginable look and feel real.
"Rosemary's Baby" is a first-rate psychological and supernatural thriller that continues, to this day, to be one of the most sinister, well-crafted and original movies of its genre.
