Evil Dead, The

"The Evil Dead" was written and directed by Sam Raimi and it scared the double hockey sticks out of me! However, it also made me chuckle with the off-the-wall cornball dialogue and the blatant stupidity of the people. C'mon, who goes out in the middle of the night, alone, walking in the thick of the woods and asking if anyone is out there? And that is just one of the many reasons why I just love this movie. "The Evil Dead" is more than a horror movie, more than an outrageous and bogus mess of demon guts and melting satanic bloody flesh, but a collision of strikingly colorful characters, clever direction and huge special effects that will blow your mind away. Look at it this way; those special effects were made in 1979. And they're more than just impressive looking - they're phenomenal.

Five college friends (including a brother and sister) head to Tennessee to a desolate cabin in the woods for a weekend of fun and relaxation. Ash (Bruce Campbell) Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) Scotty (Hal Delrich) Linda (Betsy Baker) and Shelly (Sarah York) didn't plan on finding the "Book of the Dead" fashionably preserved in human flesh and written in blood, along with a tape-recording of demonic incantations that if played will wake those dead demons up and posses their bodies. But there is good news. If one of your friends becomes a demon host, just dismember the crap out of them and they'll be as good as new! Dead, yes, but no longer possessed.

Lots of DVD extras including audio commentary by director Sam Raimi and producer Robert G. Tapert, audio commentary by actor Bruce Campbell, still photo gallery including 150 pictures, approximately 20 minutes of alternate takes and behind-the-scenes footage, theatrical trailer.

"The Evil Dead" is a great horror movie and it has the classic seal of camp and fright all over its mangled and possessed demon self. Just a suggestion: Next time you and your friends decide to go away for the weekend, skip the creepy cabin in the woods, in the middle of god-forsaken death country. Flesh-eating demons just love those kinds of places to call home!
