Ray Charles - O Genio - Live in Brazil 1963
With the posthumous resurgence of Ray Charles’s popularity, this is a perfect collection to introduce you to his early work. It’s made up of two shows recorded in Brazil, each not broadcast since 1963. Some songs from the first show are repeated in the second set, but the good news is that there are quite a few tracks that you’d find in any Ray Charles greatest hits collection, most notably: "Don’t Set Me Free", "Take These Chains from My Heart" and "Hit the Road Jack".
It’s recorded completely in black and white--showing Ray, his female backup singers, and the band. This DVD gives the viewer a chance to see the performers up close and personal as any live concert DVD would. Most surprising though is that, even though this wasn’t recorded for DVD with any modern equipment, the quality is surprisingly good. At times the sound is a bit grainy like FM radio quality, but overall it’s much better than would expect from a video recording of this vintage.
