Legally Blonde

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is a spunky, quick-witted, colorfully fashionable, squeaky cute girl, whose spitfire of a personality lands her title of homecoming queen and sorority sister to all at Delta Nu. Her greatest accomplishment by far is being the girlfriend of the very popular, rich, and handsome Warner (Matthew Davis).

Elle thought she had it all, until one night it all changed, and she realized she wasn't even close to being and getting what she truly wanted.

Recently jilted by her boyfriend for superficial, idiotic, and downright rotten reasons as he sets sail to become a serious student at Harvard Law School, Elle classically puts it: "So you're breaking up with me because I'm too blonde?"

Elle hides in her bedroom munching on a huge box of picked-apart chocolates and giving into the defeat of sadness, claiming love is a lie, until her loyal girlfriends Margot (Jessica Cauffiel)and Serena (Alanna Ubach) bring Elle to her favorite place...a hair and nail salon!

This is where Elle reads in the society section that Warner's older brother is marrying a Vandelbilt who is going to Yale Law School.

Elle gets a bright idea-- attend Harvard Law School and prove to Warner she is a serious student and perfect candidate for marriage.

Elle gets into Harvard by passing the LSAT Exam, creating an image essay which Elle turns into a high glossy video showcasing her fun and flirty personality, stylish bikini wear, and her extracurricular activities.

Harvard proves to be anything but easy and everything about human decency, friendship, confidence, trust, and self awareness.

When Elle gets ousted from class on her first day by Vivian (Selma Blair), a snobby, preppy student who agreed with professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) that until she comes to class prepared, not to come at all.

Elle gathers her belongings and heads outside. Her feathers are ruffled and she is obviously flustered. Elle is then befriended by Emmett (Luke Wilson), who she meets on the bench outside. Emmett gives Elle some pointers on her upcoming professors. Struck by the pleasantness and generosity, Elle continues to keep the conversation going, until she's unaware Warner has shown up to meet her...and he's not alone. Vivian, that annoying girl from her first class is Warner's fiancee.

In a fit of tears, Elle drives off and does a double take when she spies a hair and nail salon. Inside, she tells her woes to Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge). They become very good friends and help each other out. Especially with Elle getting Paulette's dog back from her low-life ex-boyfriend who refuses to give him back, and winning the affections of the UPS man (Bruce Thomas)-- a great scene!

Throughout the course of Elle's semester, she begins to revel in her studies, stand out and take some initiative, grabbing the attention of her fellow peers and professors. She even gets chosen by professor Callahan (Victor Garber) to assist on a high profile murder case (on which she gains valuable information), and becomes aware of her true spirit, desire, and a love that is blossoming.

Fashion makes a key point, particularly at the end when Elle is in the court room. Her clothing displays freedom of expression and determination to be in control of what is important.

The opening and closing song "Perfect Day" symbolizes what Elle thought she had, ultimately she does have, and will continue to happily flourish in and with whom.

I recommend "Legally Blonde" because it is a sweet, funny, light-hearted movie with a strong message of believing in yourself, not being afraid to make and learn from our mistakes, and the opportunity for second chances.

P.S. I must say I got a huge chuckle when Elle was sitting outside taking part in a group discussion. Basically the group was patting their own backs about their intelligence and accomplishments. When Elle's turn was up she was, shall we say, much more bubbly and carefree...especially when she said she was a "Gemini vegetarian."

I am not blonde, but I am a Gemini vegetarian. Way to go, Elle!
