George Lucas' first film is astounding.
From the very start, we are immersed in a vision of the 25th century, where the populace is kept under tight government control, and the mirror in the bathroom dispenses the compulsory daily drug ration. Shaven-headed people live underground, presumably because of a nuclear holocaust on the surface, and shuffle like zombies from their house to work and back again.
LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie) decides to stop taking the sedatives and hides those of her partner, THX 1138 (Robert Duvall). They fall in love, but of course, their actions do not avoid notice for long, and THX is forced to go on the run to escape arrest. He is caught and punished, but manages to flee again, and his adventures form the rest of the film.
Like 1984, this is a compelling vision of a future where the human spirit has almost been crushed, and THX is the worm that turns. The quality of the soundtrack is first class, and Lucas' editing breathtaking.
The power of a film is in the details, and here there many exquisite touches. A true classic!
