The Place to Be
Web site reminds us of region's true value
A husband-wife travel writing team recently posted a series of stories on a popular Internet site about the pair's pleasant visit to particular region of the county. Donald and Janet Miserandino, of the Bronx, New York, wrote the piece that appeared on the popular travel Web site thecelebritycafe.com. And the region of the country they featured?
The Mid-Ohio Valley.
Many residents pile into their vehicles with their gear every weekend for trips somewhere else to find their recreation. Maybe we should read the Miserandino's article and once again realize what we have out our own back doors.
"These are the things we see everyday and take for granted," Steve Nicely, executive director of the Parkersburg-Wood County Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the newspaper about area places visited by the New York couple.
Perhaps we should try and see our area from point of view of first-time visitors, such as the Miserandios. During the couple's stay, a few of the places they visited are familiar names to us all: Blennerhassett Hotel, Blennerhassett Museum and Blennerhassett Island, the Smoot Theatre, Fenton Art Glass and Middleton Doll factory in Belpre. In addition, the couple visited North Bend State Park, the R.C. Marshall Hardware Store in Cairo, took a five-mile bike ride on the North Bend Rail Trail and then had ice cream at the Scoop, also in Cairo.
According to the story, the couple loved their stay in West Virginia, saying they didn't get to experience much of the "Wild" but what they did experience was certainly "wonderful." The wonderful thing about the Miserandino's three-part piece is that it will stay on the Web site as long as the site remains on the Internet. Thecelebritycafe.com is one of the oldest entertainment sites on the Internet, and has been up since 1996. The site receives nearly 950,000 hits a month "People trust what they say," Nicely said.
Our area is rich in both recreation and culture. We have museums and shopping. We have one of the most unique state parks in the United States - Blennerhassett Island. We have another state park that is almost 74 miles long - The North Bend Rail Trail. We have wonderful things to do here and if we forget that, we have two New Yorkers to remind us of that fact. We shouldn't let familiarity keep us from enjoying those wonderful things. In the next few days, all schools will be out for the summer and families will be planning vacations. When making those plans we should make sure to visit some of the wonderful sites in our area.
