Tales from the Crypt

By Robert Kirchgassner,
the classic HBO series

This anthology series (which is definitely not for children) ran on HBO from 1989-1996.

It was based on the EC comic book of the same name which, sadly, fell victim to McCarthyism during the 1950s.

Happily, this series did justice to the comic, even more so than the 1972 movie, Tales from the Crypt. The stories were adapted from issues of Crypt as well as other EC comics such as The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear and Shock SuspenStories.

The introductions from the darkly funny Crypt Keeper (voiced by John Kassir and performed by Van Snowden) always set the tone for each week’s installment.

Stars such as Demi Moore, Christopher Reeve, Kirk Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg, John Lithgow and Tim Curry were seen in installments. Directors such as Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper and Richard Donner also lent credibility to the series.

The show’s success led to the movies Demon Knight (1995) and Bordello of Blood (1996), neither of which I enjoyed as much as the series.
