Rachel Millman is an indie pop singer that just released her second album, NOW, in February 2013. The album is a solid mix of strong vocals, great background music and awesome lyrics that end up making a mix of songs that you can’t help but enjoy.
Millman attended Penn State and majored in Communications, but after graduating from the university in 2008 she decided to focus on a bigger passion of hers: music. She then released her first album, If I Believe, in 2009 and has gone on to perform on NBC’s Weekend Today and even sing the National Anthem at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets. Although Millman was born in Springfield, New Jersey, she now lives in New York City, where she continues to perform at different events and gain popularity all over the country.
Millman’s voice is a unique combination of powerful and sweet, something that separates her from other artists. This shines through in NOW, as Millman has a subtle, yet strong way to show off her vocals.
Lyrics are a big part of any album, and Millman’s lyrics make the album even better. Her lyrics are very relatable, making her music perfect when you need some inspiration or just a smile on your face.
A favorite from the album is “Big Bite,” where she sings about being in New York and approaching life in a fearless way. She sings, “I’m gonna take a big bite out of the big apple/ Hungry for more than just a taste of the upper crust/ I’m giving all I have to give/ It’s what inside that’s real in this beautiful life we live.” Listening to the song, you can almost picture yourself walking around in New York City with this song playing in the background.
Other favorites from the album include “Now” and “Take All The Sky You Need.” Lyrics from “Now” include “We might be a little scared, afraid to say what lies out there … Now all we have is in this moment.”
NOW is a very Disney-like album, one with a very feel-good theme that leaves the listener happy and in a good mood. The strong vocals, great lyrics and upbeat music make a great mix of songs that you’ll be finding yourself singing after.
