Cage the Elephant are releasing their third studio album, titled Melophobia, on October 8.
Right now, the album can be streamed on the Rolling Stone website. So make sure to check it out, because it’s out of this world!
The album comes after the band’s long break and I must say that it only had a positive effect on their musical direction. Melophobia is a treat for every musical gourmet. It’s a little sour and a little sweet - a perfect combination, if you ask me. It also happens to be very raw, emotional and completely honest.
These are the tracks that stuck out the most to me: “Spiderhead,” “Come a Little Closer,” “Halo,” “Black Widow,” “Hypocrite,” “Teeth” and “Cigarette Daydreams.”
“Spiderhead” was a great opening to the album. I was hooked right away. It’s retro rock perfection with playful drums, energetic and passionate vocals and impeccable lyrics. "Spiders in my head/spiders in my mind. You may take my eyes/but baby I’m not blind." How wise is this? I mean, really…
“Come a Little Closer” is a beautiful song with a hovering guitar riff, addictive drums and vocals that range from vulnerable to powerful. If this one doesn’t sweep you off your feet, I don’t know which one will.
“Halo” is a very catchy and energetic track with some screamy transitions.
With blazing instrumentals and hazy and sexy vocals, “Black Widow” is a very seductive track.
And then we have “Hypocrite,” which is an upbeat track with rolling drums and unexpected trumpets.
“Teeth” is such a wild track, carrying a strong message. It’s absolutely out of control (for the most part) and so unique.
And finally, “Cigarette Daydreams” is ending the album on a peaceful note. The beautiful acoustic guitar riff and shy piano got me right away.
Overall, a great album. Cage the Elephant can’t seem to go wrong.
