Ashlinn Gray releases self-titled debut and impresses

Ashlinn Gray has released her self-titled debut and this entire album is a refreshing and unexpected surprise. Gray's musical sound mixes pop, indie, folk and even at times a touch of reggae, to create this sound that feels new and modern. The pop music industry is known for becoming stale at times and recycling the same beats and catchy melodies but Gray is pushing the boundaries and adding her own flavor into the industry.

Gray is originally from South Africa and is only seventeen years old. She manages to balance, school, family and friends and her growing career, despite her young age. Her roots come across on this album because it pulls from so many difference influences, it is clear that Gray wanted to present a more worldly sound that has the ability to translate into any market, be it the United States or South Africa.

The album opens with "Battleships," which is an upbeat and catchy opening track. This sets the tone for the rest of the album and introduces her unique musical tone. The bass line that is featured throughout the track keeps the upbeat momentum and really highlights Gray's vocals. Following "Battleships" the album ease into a slower paced single, "Sugarcoated Lemons," which shows off more of the subtle tone to Gray, which could be compared to that of Ingrid Michaelson or A Fine Frenzy because she has a similar tone when she sings. Her vocals are very light and airy but also tell a the musical story that is framed by the lyrics.

Other stand out tracks on the album include, "More Than Nothing" and "Risking It All."

Gray is able to be the driving force behind each song on the album and brings everything together with her vocal performance. She is not only incredibly talented but is thinking outside of the box at the age of seventeen. Picture Gray auditioning for The Voice or another reality show that could expand her talent, she would be a contender right from the audition stage.

Ashlinn Gray is a name we will be hearing more from very soon. The music industry needs this breath of fresh air and energy.
