Deborah Crooks 'Something Special' EP review

Something Special is a three-song EP released by Deborah Crooks, featuring “India Street,” “Room 223,” and the titular single.

The EP as a whole has an easy listening vibe. While each song is distinct there is a flow between the melodies. They play well with one another.

According to Crooks’ website, Something Special was influenced by her California background as well as her travels. Each song has a specific inspiration. “India Street” is a “meditation of various expressions of faith,” “Room 223,” has a “he-done-me-wrong narrative,” and “Something Special” is about Bigfoot and turns into “a metaphor for transcendence.”

When you listen to Something Special’s songs you can hear Crooks’ inspirations for the each tune. For example, the lyrics in “Something Special” mention yetis, Sasquatch, and Bigfoot multiple times. You feel like you are sharing experiences with Crooks as you listen and sing along.

Although this is the first time Crooks has recorded these three songs in the studio, they have been staples in her playlists for quite some time.

“I was in the studio with the band working on the next KCDC CD earlier this year and we found we had some studio time left to play with. We decided to record some of my stray songs, those tunes that always make it onto the set list but had yet to be recorded,” Crooks says of her EP on her site.

Crooks has a variety of EPs and full length albums. In 2013 she released the album Little Bird , an eclectic album that included elements of funk, reggae, rock, and blues.

Although she was born in California, raised in the Bay Area and currently resides in San Francisco, Crooks spent time studying in Colorado and India, and her music is influenced by her time spent in each place.

Aside from her music career, Crooks is also a yogi and a writer.

If you love a folksy, singer-songwriter music Something Special is worth a listen.
