He’s the drummer of the Grammy-nominated band, Spin Doctors, but this May Aaron Comess showed listeners he has more skills than holding a pair of sticks.
Sure, he has worked with singer-songwriter Joan Osborne, not to mention he has performed live with Natasha Bedingfield and Rachel Yamagata. But on June 30, audiences will get a glimpse of Aaron at The Rockwood Music Hall 2 in the Lower East Side for his CD release concert.
In Beautiful Mistake, Aaron aims for diversity without being showy. As with a lot of singers, having one hyphen or comma isn’t enough of a stretch for a title in front of their names. They have to have a whole Wikipedia of credits listing them as producer, guitarist, banjo player, and any extinct music profession.
Of course the whole point of an instrumental album is to embrace the multi-gifted that is the musician.
And that is where Aaron comes in with the acoustic guitar in stride. He meanders through “Kumpelicious” with nostalgia strumming with each fingertip. He takes the therapeutic route with track five, “Morning Beach.”
He does a complete one-eighty with “Dirt” with a more focus on drums and cymbals, but this is definitely more Aaron from the sounds of it. It’s more of an offhand rawness that one doesn’t hear elsewhere among the first half of the instrumentals.
“Dirt” actually ups the pace for the rest of the album, paving way for the quirky “Limbo” and the entertaining “High Five,” which I would love to see live actually.
The last melody, “I Love You” could easily be a cut from Shania Twain’s instrumental version of “Still the One.” Call it a coincidence. Call me a hopeless romantic. But it’s good to end on a high note.
This summer, you can catch Aaron performing at venues across the country. Be sure to check Aaron’s official website for calendar updates and to stream Beautiful Mistake.
