'Alone with You' Single: Review

Victoria Meng

"Alone with You," the newest single from country singer Jake Owen, breathes some semblance of life into the country genre. What's meant to be a simple and moving style of music is often bland and manufacturedly clean, but "Alone with You" avoids this pitfall.

The lyrics are sweet and seem surprisingly sincere. "I don't see you laugh/You don't call me back...but you kiss me when you're drunk"...the song appears to be about falling in love with a woman who is only using you for fun and sex. A romance/heartbreak song which holds back on cliches is fairly rare in music, but the lyrics here are simple and straightforward without being hackneyed or insulting to our intelligence.

The composition and production is decent. Guitar and drums come in at the right places, and Jake Owen's vocals aren't bad to listen to. Admittedly, the music doesn't sound particularly intense for the subject matter; you could replace the sad lyrics with happy ones and the music would still suit the song, but country fans who enjoy a measure of restraint in their music should have no problem with this song.
