'Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star'

Gyra Chan

Sean Hayes has the kind of voice and airy tunes that will make you want to sing out loud despite the fact that your voice makes small children cringe… well, maybe it’s just my terrible voice that makes small children run, but regardless, artists like Sean Hayes make me remember why I love listening to music.

His CD, Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star has a great sound. If acoustic, groovy, and airy could have a baby, it would be this CD. It’s the sort of CD that will make you feel reminiscent and nostalgic about nothing in particular.

However, while this CD has plenty of good songs, it has one undeniable gem of a tune. It is the kind of song that gives you the urge to cry for no reason even if you’re having the best day of your life. It’s the kind of song you will play on repeat over and over much to the dismay of your roommates. It’s the song that you will always turn to when you are having a bad day and looking for some kind of silver lining to your terribly cloudy life. 'Calling All Cars' may be the best song I’ve stumbled upon during my insane college career- It seems to push all the right buttons on my musical remote control regardless of my constantly evolving mood.

But rest assured, it’s not the kind of CD that only has one really good song and the rest of them are total crap. That is certainly not the case, this is a CD chalk full of great tunes and poignant lyrics. Sean Hayes is not afraid to go there with his lyrics; he dares to say what we all think.

And if that description of his lyrics doesn’t do it for you, let me take it one step further and say that I would use lyrics from any of his songs as potential Facebook statuses …and I’m very particular about my lyrical Facebook statuses. So if value candor in your lyrics and phantom nostalgia, Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star is for you!
