Book Review: 'Dollhouse' by Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian

Although half the world is on a Kardashian detox, some dedicated fans were still eagerly awaiting the arrival of the sisters' new novel, Dollhouse.

The book, which is co-written by Kim, Kourtney, Khloe (and a ghostwriter), tells the story of the Ramero family. Kat Ramero is the matriarch of the family and runs the family business, a small California restuarant. After her husband's death, she marries Beau LeBlanc, a former pro-athlete. Besides Beau's two children, Bree and Benjy, she also is busy raising her three daughters from her previous marriage: Kamille, Kassidy, and Kyle.

"Kam" is the middle child and knows she is destined for something greater than working in her family's restaurant. Her older sister, Kassidy, is a hard-working, agenda-following straight-A student at the University of Southern California; focusing too much on her job and school to ever find love. The youngest, Kyle, is still mourning her father's death and often expresses it in various less-than-legal ways.

The beginning of the novel starts slowly as we're guided through the daily lives of the family. It's not until Kamille is discovered by an agency and starts modeling that the story picks up. As she quickly becomes sucked into her new life of glamour and fame, we are, too. She begins dating Chase Goodall, a major league baseball player, which helps her become even more of a celebrity.

At first, her sisters assume it's another one of Kam's "boyfriends of the week" and that he'll be out of the picture even faster than he entered it. But as time passes, and he sticks around, her family begins to see how serious she is about him; Kam has finally fallen in love.

But as Kam becomes more serious with Chase; Kassidy takes a page out of her youngest sister's book and has a hard night of partying to get over the fact that she has yet to fall in love. In a drunken stupor, Kass returns to her and Kam's apartment; finding it empty except for Chase. Feeling upset and alone, she sleeps with him.

While the first half of the book seems to be just the book version of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, this is where the characters really begin to separate themselves from the authors. Yes, there is still the fun, pretty sister who falls too quickly in love and plans a wedding that should probably never occur, but it becomes obvious that the characters around her aren't as much of the cookie cutter versions of the Kardashians that we had earlier in the novel. The rest of the book follows Kam as she plans her wedding with Chase and Kassidy as she tries to keep her secrets from her family.

If you're interested in the Kardashian sisters, Dollhouse is a fun read. It's not the best celebrity-penned novel out there, and we're not exactly sure who the target audience is - it seems to be a fifth grade reading level with some four letter curse words thrown in throughout. However, it's a quick way to pass the time. Yes, it's a guilty pleasure, but if you're a fan of the Kardashians, we're way past that....
