Book Review: 'Elixir' by Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff signs copies of 'Devoted: an Elixir Novel, Vol. 2' at Barnes & Noble on October 10, 2011 in New York City.....

Hilary Duff’s freshman novel, Elixir, hit shelves in 2010 and quickly earned a spot on the New York Times best seller list. Although I was hesitant to pick up a book written by a celebrity, for some reason Elixir caught my attention. After the first chapter, I was immediately smitten with the cast of characters.

We’re introduced to Clea Raymond, daughter of Grant and Victoria Raymond, world-renowned surgeon and prominent politician, respectively. Although Clea is no stranger to the spotlight because of her famous parents, she prefers to see the world through a camera lens and works as a freelance photojournalist for various publications. Traveling around the world with Clea is her advisor and best friend, Ben. Ben is quirky yet brilliant; he’s only 20 years old but already holds a doctorate and speaks multiple languages fluently. He’s also one heck of a cribbage player.

When she isn’t on assignment, Clea tries to keep a low profile and live the life of an average 17-year-old. She’s also trying to make sense of her father’s sudden disappearance while on a humanitarian mission in South America. What she doesn’t know is how much she’s about to learn about her father and one of his favorite hobbies.

After a trip to Paris, Clea begins to notice the shadow of a young man in every photograph she develops from her vacation. It’s here that we’re plunged into a world of life, death, soul mates and friendship. When Clea learns of the deep connection she and the shadowy figure share, she sets out for more answers. Her quest takes her halfway around the world where she comes face to face with Sage, the man from her photos.

While Elixir is not a deep, life-altering tale of love, it’s certainly entertaining and an easy read, perfect for any chick-lit fans. Pick up a copy to enjoy over the holiday breaks or lazy Sundays and stay tuned for the review of Elixir's follow-up novel, Devoted.
