Upon first listening to Phil Putnam's "Casualties," this CD gave me the impression that it was destined to be nothing more than a mediocre effort. However and luckily, this feeling didn't last long.
The opening track, "More Than This," starts off somewhat weak, with contrived lyrics that did not feel fresh and new. However, by the time some more complex, richly melodic tunes like "Sophisticated Life" and "Paris" rolled around, my fears were completely allayed and I began to appreciate the artistry and professionalism that went into crafting the smart, literate compositions that make up "Casualties."
"Let It Go" is a standout, as the duet on the vocals is very pretty and elevates this track to another level. However, although "I'm No Prize" features some nice guitar solos, the vocal track sounds off-key, which detracts from the overall effect.
"Casualties" is a roller coaster of a CD that takes you on quite a journey. It may not always hit the highest heights, but the thrills make it worth the trip.
