CD Review, "Youth in Revolt" Soundtrack

Although I haven’t seen this film, I was very impressed by the Youth In Revolt soundtrack. I had not heard of many of the artists (John Swihart, Fleshpot, even Michael Cera himself), but thoroughly enjoyed the folk, easy listening quality to the tracks. If you enjoy artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Explosions in the Sky, you may enjoy this soundtrack. My favorite track was the first, “When You Love Somebody” by the Fruit Bats, which coincidentally is the longest track on the album. That leads to my next discovery, seeing as this is an album made to support a film, there are many tracks less than, or a bit more than a minute, which in my opinion is not exactly worthwhile. Listening to the entire CD in a loop, you may fail to notice the division of tracks, but individually the shorter tracks left me wanting more.

For the non-indie listening crowd, I wouldn’t recommend this album. Much like Michael Cera’s roles in films, this album is catered to the Juno and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist watchers. On the other hand, if those movies grace your top favorites, be sure to get your hands on this soundtrack.
