Back in 1995, Chris Bergson returned to his NY roots to start his musical career backing jazz singers. In 1997, he released his first album Blues For Some Friends of Mine.
Since then, Bergson proved himself to be a talented lyricist, vocalist, and guitar player. Chris Bergson Band’s most recent album Imitate the Sun is no exception.
With sax player Jay Collins, bassist Matt Clohesy, drummer Tony Leone, keyboard player Bruce Katz and special guests, trumpet player Kenny Rampton and sax player Chris Karlic, Bergson delivers blues in a nitty, gritty, good for your soul way.
Bergson’s vocals possess a great raspy quality, his guitar playing is smooth, and his accompaniment is top notch.
The first track “Going Home," though an original, sounds as though it could be a classic, which is a credit to his song writing ability. It is catchy and easy to listen to.
Here is a video from a performance at the Bowery Electric in NYC:
Title track “Imitate the Sun” is another easy listen with thoughtful lyrics and a nice sax interlude, making it a bit jazzy.
In addition to original songs, Bergson and his band also covers “Down in the Bottom,” Elmore James’ “Dust my Broom,” ragtime era song “You’ve been a Good Old Wagon” and Bob Dylan’s “Standing in my Doorway.” Bergson makes each his own but stays true to the roots and meaning of the music.
