Cirque du Soleil’s acrobatic rock opera, Zarkana, premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 29.
The show has drawn rave reviews from critics for the suspense provided by gravity-defying circus acts, the visually captivating presentation, and the diverse cast’s ability to thrill audiences with powerful vocals and physical prowess.
Zarkana, a François Girard-directed production, features over 70 performers from 15 countries. The story centers on a magician named Zark, who suddenly loses his powers and the love of his life, Lia, in a theater populated by mutant ladies and other bizarre characters aiming to thwart his quest to find his lost love.
Garou, a Quebec-born pop singer from Notre-Dame de Paris, plays the starring role of Zark. Cassiopée, an opera-trained performer who plays Lia and all the sinister sirens in Zarkana, displays her versatility by altering her voice for each character and singing upside down as the spider lady.
The production’s music is composed by Nick Littlemore, the frontman of Australian dance music duo PNAU who is perhaps best known as a protégé of Sir Elton John.
Zarkana’s run at Radio City Music Hall ends on October 8. Visit Cirque du Soleil’s official website to learn more about the show and view the full performance schedule.
