Corrina, Corrina

A young girl tries to cope with the death of her mother.

Manny Singer, played by Ray Liotta, is a newly widowed father in 1959 looking for someone to help take care of his young daughter, Molly. Due to his good looks and charm, Manny gets a large number of single female applicants who want a chance to work in his home. Joan Cusack makes a cameo as an overly-excited woman who will do just about anything to make Manny happy, including an attempt at going to bed with her new boss. Manny quickly hires the sarcastic and strong-willed nanny, Corrina, played by Whoopi Goldberg, to look after his daughter.

Molly Singer, played by "Napoleon Dynamite" actress Tina Majorino, is a depressed 7-year-old girl who has become a mute. Communicating is extremely hard to do with Molly, but Corrina goes about her business as usual. After a few weeks in the Singer household, Corrina and Molly communicate through Molly patting her nose in response to questions. Molly eventually starts speaking again, which makes Manny extremely happy to have his daughter back to normal.

Manny is a commercial songwriter who spends most of his days in boardrooms attempting to pitch new music. He lets Corrina take Molly wherever she likes, including giving Molly cultural lessons on African-American life in the segregated country. Molly spends a lot of scenes at Corrina's home playing with nieces and nephews. Once Molly had to return to school, her shyness returns and she begs Corrina to let her stay with her during the day instead of being at school learning. Corrina agrees, but finds herself manipulated by Molly since the young girl refuses to ever return to school.

Manny and Corrina begin a flirtatious relationship which creates an idea for Molly. She hopes that her father and her nanny will get married, but Corrina is fired once Manny realizes Molly hasn't been in school for weeks.

This movie is sad in the beginning while Molly deals with the death of her mother, but quickly gets better once Corrina starts her job with the family. There are some cute scenes between Corrina and Molly, and also some father-daughter bonding scenes with Manny and Molly. This is a great movie to watch with older children for a movie night, but it can be a tearjerker at times.
