The Covering

I never thought I’d hear the words Christian music and metal in the same sentence, but that is exactly what the band Stryper is. I was a bit skeptical to hear their music at first because I had no idea how the two could mix, but honestly, I was pleasantly surprised.

Made up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass) and Robert Sweet (drums), Stryper has been making music since 1983.

The band’s new album The Covering is full of 13 tracks – 12 which are classic songs they covered (pun possibly intended?) and one original song entitled “God.”

Starting off with their original song, I have to say that I really enjoyed it! It showed off the group’s vocal range, and it has a fantastic guitar riff in the middle of it. The band members are definitely talented.

Stryper’s version of “Carry On Wayward Son” also blew me away. They really added a great twist to the song and brought a lot of energy to it. In addition, I really liked “Set Me Free” and “The Trooper,” but it's hard to pick favorites because all of the songs on the album are very good.

I would recommend that everyone give this CD a listen. Even if Christian rock isn’t your thing, you have to admit the band sounds phenomenal and that they make great music.
