Culture Killers
According to the band's website, Culture Killers is all about "loud" rock 'n' roll, something they don't quite deliver on.
The band is made up of two Kansas City Natives, Guitarist Delta Starr and singer David George along with two Philadelphians bassist Johnny Tokes and drummer Johnny G. Their new self-titled EP gives the listener a taste of some nice guitar riffs and some fun rock songs.
Now the bands music is definitely rock 'n' roll but it isn't starting a new revolution for "loud" rock music, as they seem to think they are. When I heard the description of a new revolution of raw rock music, I expected loud instruments that I could barely hear the lyrics over, and that's not what I got (not to say I was disappointed; I like to hear my lyrics). But the Culture Killers do rock more than, let's say, Good Charlotte.
With just 5 songs that don't really vary too much in sound, it wouldn't be hard to get a little bored listening this CD, but the beauty is it's short.
I really enjoyed the creepy feeling that first came out of the first song on the CD, "Let Me Drive." However it crossed the line of creepy cool into just plain creepy with its interlude that included actual female screaming/moaning. I was a little afraid a girl might be locked in the trunk.
The second song "Gone Hollywood" was good but still not hard enough. With its references to drugs, you'd assume there would be some killer sounds to rock out to but the song never quite left the level of guitar hero.
The third song, "So You," was a bit harder but I felt I'd heard it or at least the style of it before and it lasted just a bit too long. "Something Missing" started out harder and then it went mellow at the end of the song. The contrast was really interesting and enjoyable. The final song "Gasoline" like the rest of the CD was good but still not hard rock.
Overall the CD was good and if I had never been led to believe I was about to hear some music that was going to change where rock music was going I probably wouldn't have been disappointed. The Culture Killers are telling the truth when they say on their website, "It's almost embarrassing to see some of these bands call themselves rock & roll." The Culture Killers is not a band that I would be embarrassed to put into the rock genre. I'd give the EP a shot if you were looking for real rock music. It should be available on Itunes soon.
