Dark Was the Night is a two-disc compilation album, released by the Red Hot Organization to raise money for AIDS research.
"So Far Around the Bend" by the National, is a great track. The combination of Matt Berninger's deep, almost monotone voice, and the composition and arrangement of Nico Muhly make this an excellent song.
Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner team up on the song, "Big Red Machine." This song has a classical feel to it, while still sounding rather modern. The use of violins and piano in this song, complement Vernon's voice perfectly.
Iron & Wine's contribution, "Die," while being the shortest track on either disc, is, in my opinion, the best track on the album. Samuel Beam's voice combined with his excellent guitar playing made this song incredibly enjoyable for the brief time it was playing. The lyrics of this song are great as well, showcasing the poetry of Beam's songs.
I would recommend this album to anyone, not just because it is great musically, but because it helps a good cause as well.
