David Wood’s CD titled Country, is exactly what its title implies. Its four tracks go into detail about real life hardships while also letting loose and having a good time.
The opening track begins with sprightly acoustic guitar and harmonica as Wood’s subdued voice articulates lyrics such as, “Well, I saw my tombstone in my dreams last night, standing proudly in the ground. I pondered with some wonderment how this came to pass. Now if you had a chance to view your life from a few steps away, what would you see?” The acoustic guitar that plays throughout the track gives it a down home vibe.
The second track leads off with labored acoustic guitar and Wood’s somber voice singing lyrics like, “Midnight, that old clock keeps tickin.’ The kids are all asleep and I’m walkin’ the floor. Darlin’ I can see that your dreamin’ and I don’t wanna wake you up…This old house of ours…There’s a garden outside she works in everyday and tomorrow a man from the bank is gonna come and take it all away.” The desperate situation depicted by Wood along with his anguished vocals denotes a true country western tune that is filled with sorrow and tribulation.
The third track picks up the pace with energetic acoustic guitar and Wood bellowing “Cowabunga.” The lively acoustic guitar continues in the background as Wood conveys a tale about a place where all different types of people come together to have a good ol’ time with lyrics like, “Well, way out in the desert where the cactus grow, there’s a new kinda dirt snuffin’ rodeo. Cowboys dig it and the surfers too. They yell ‘Cowabunga!’ and shout ‘Yahoo!’ and they ride ride ride.” Backup singers echo Wood’s “ride ride ride,” which gives the track an even larger feeling of joy and unity.
The fourth and final track is initiated with a more rock sounding guitar and drums as Wood recounts a joyride that he and a lady friend undertook with lyrics such as, “Drivin’ just a little too fast. Full tank I think, this feelin’ just might last. Cool night breeze blowin’ through our hair, we’ll know where we’re goin’ when we get there…You and me baby tonight. Followin’ the full moon down a country road. Baby, we’re hot tonight, let the good times roll. Never felt so good not knowin’ where we’re goin’ followin’ a full moon down a country road.” The carefree spirit in Wood’s voice is noticeable to any listener and the track’s danceable beat makes it one an authentic country music fan could do the infamous line dance to with their sweetheart right beside.
In closing, Country from David Wood is the consummate album for the true country music enthusiast. It’s got a bit of sadness mixed with a bit of good ol’ fashioned fun.
