Enrique Iglesias began his career singing Latin love ballads in the 1990s, but transitioned to the American pop market because he didn’t have enough of a public image to be pidgeon-holed into his first genre. His most recent single, “Dirty Dancer,” is of his typical blandness. It’s a dance song that will sound good while it lasts on the charts, but offers nothing innovative and will be forgotten after it drops off.
There is nothing noteworthy about the production itself; it’s what you’d expect to see in a typical club song, but not earthshakingly catchy. A person would have to push very hard to think of something distinctive to say about it. Lil’ Wayne is featured on this song, because Lil’ Wayne likes to collaborate with everyone who’s anyone in the music industry, and Usher is here because he’ll never regain the glory days of 2004, but he has enough of it left over to enjoy good sales and prominent appearances.
What is of note is the song’s words: Enrique has continued his trend of semi-disturbing lyrics that he started with “Tonight (I’m F**king You),” where the chorus mainly consisted of him repeating the song’s title over and over again. The lyrics raised a few eyebrows, (What, is he trying to say “Tonight I’ll be f**king you no matter what you do even if you say no?”). But Enrique and his staff probably assumed that most pop fans don’t pay much attention to lyrics, and he’s right.
Fortunately, “Dirty Dancer” is filled with stereotypical lyrics about pretty women and dancing rather than particularly questionable ones. The only “bad” line would be, “She’s a five when she drinks/ But a ten when she’s on top of me.” And that line doesn’t even make Enrique sound creepy; it makes him sound like a douche bag, yes, but at least he's not a creepy one.
