J. Mascis has been making music for a long time. Over the course of his career, many bands have risen and fallen, but Dinosaur Jr. has maintained its niche in rock n' roll, and created a steady sound which is unmistakable, and despite its simplicity, is nearly impossible to replicate. Much of this sound focuses around Mascis's singing and guitar playing, each one subtle, and easy to underrate. This is what makes it signature.
A standard three-piece band, Dinosaur Jr.'s main sounds comes from the guitars, and its main instrument is the rhythm guitar. It may seem strange that rhythm guitar is the main attraction, but this is because it is rhythm guitar played as it should be. The lines are filled with subtle frills, riffs, and slides that continue to keep the music fresh, and sometimes Mascis will break into a solid solo. Mascis's singing is scratchy, and tired, but in that way it is poignant and touching.
