Seasoned singer/songwriter and blues drumming veteran Simon Kirke, best known for his work with Bad Company and Free, has released his second solo album since Seven Rays of Hope in 2005. Although this is only his second studio album, Kirke has been a key member in many recording projects and has worked on countless albums with legends as high in the ranks as Keith Richards, Bo Diddly, Led Zeppelin , Ray Charles and a slew of other insanely influential and pivotal acts in his nearing half century long music career.
His newest album, Filling the Void, is a culmination of soft-rock, hard-rock and blues-rock. Many songs bequeath a very Paul Simon vibe as some songs, such as “Jaunty Sarcasm,” feature a New Orleans style blues piano and a far more bluesy feel. His lyrics put a great emphasis on the great truths of blues and rock. Love, life, loss, drink and desire.
The 62-year-old, South London born bluesman is a guy who has been around, experienced, loved and learned from music over a multiple decade long spectrum of influences, And this shows with every track which is sewn together with a great air of professionalism that is matched only by the aspects of passion and raw talent.
Regardless, if you’re more into the grassroots blues sound or looking for a more adult-rock like, Jim Croce kind of groove, Kirke has the musical savvy and ability to fully please either kind of listener.
