Freedom Suite

Some albums, no matter what genre, will just lull anyone in. Freedom Suite is not one of those. With what is assumedly an earnest attempt to create flavorful jazz, somehow Sonny Rollins's album, even featuring bonus tracks, just doesn't jump with passion. This is especially surprising, considering the original release date of this album was 1958. No, the album is short, often repetitive, and the tunes just aren't that smooth and easy to lay back to and enjoy. There are certainly quite pleasant moments of jazz-infused fun and rhythm, but just very few. If you are looking for a rich jazz album to enjoy this summer, look elsewhere.
