Friends with Money

Lynda Dale MacLean

The soundtrack to "Friends with Money" a Sundance film starring Jennifer Aniston, Frances McDormand, Joan Cusack and Catherine Keener; and scored by Craig Richey, a humble and sensationally tender and compelling songwriter is one of the most inspiring, insightful and complete sounding soundtracks I've come across in a long time.

Neil Halstead has an engaging song called "Seasons" and it's so full of warmth, character and poetic personality that the song seems like a story on its own. The Weepies' song "World Spins Madly On" is just as deep and emotional, and both songs did more than touch me; they made me listen to what was being said. Big Red Button's song "Leaving Home" has a Susanna Hoffs feel and is full of splendid storytelling and extremely likable music.

And then I fell in love with all of Craig Richey's music on the soundtrack. I fell in love with his ability to create such pure music. It's a rarity to connect to the depths of the human soul as beautifully as Craig Richey did. "Free Sample Dance," "The Escalator Waltz," "You Need Some Sunshine," "Finding Resolution," "Allargando and Nostalgic Waltz," "Rolling C" and "Allargando Reprise" are astonishing. I now can't wait to see "Friends with Money" because of its soundtrack.
