The Future Is Unwritten

The Future Is Unwritten is often billed as a rock tribute album to Joe Strummer. It's a pretty long CD, coming in at over 20 tracks. Perhaps for die-hard fans of The Clash, it will be a nice arrival. For fans of mainstream rock and alternative, however, it's just not that great. When put in contrast to some of the biggest names in rock and metal today, the songs on The Future Is Unwritten often pale. One definite exception, however, is the cover of "Rock the Casbah," by Rachid Taha. With a song as great as this, someone would have to work very hard to really mess it up. Taha's definitely isn't as good as the original Clash recording, but it feels right and flows well, with a head-bangin' attitude. Nina Simone's "To Love Somebody" is not bad either. The rest of the album . . . not so much. It is a shame, because Strummer & The Mescaleros have put out so much other good music.
