Gangs of New York, The

Caroline Clarke
Based on true events in American history during the 1860s, blood, savage fights, and a butcher named Bill ruled the rough side of New York. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis, Cameron Diaz

The much-anticipated film from Martin Scorsese has finally arrived with an excellent portrayal of the historic events from the actual gangs of New York during the time of the Civil War.

The great Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson) has lost his battle with his fellow Dead Rabbits gang of immigrants against the villainous Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day Lewis) and his fellow gang of native-born Americans.

After Vallon's murder, his son (Leonardo DiCaprio) is locked up in reform school and released sixteen years later. Retreating to his filthy hometown of Hell's Gate, he discovers that Bill the Butcher's gang now dominates the corrupt streets. The Dead Rabbits are no longer mentioned, but there is an annual celebration of Vallon's defeat and slaying.

Young Vallon realizes the danger if anyone discovers his true identity, but wants to desperately avenge his father's murder. Disguising himself as a New York native called "Amsterdam" in order to avoid the same fate as his father, he finds work behind enemy lines to get close to his sworn enemy and avenge his father's murder.

But how easy can that plan be?

This is a must see movie for the incredible performance by Daniel Day Lewis, which will probably win him a second Academy Award.

To those who get weak by the sight of blood and guts, beware! It's vicious and very realistic. One of the characters even kept the ears of her victims in a glass jar at the local saloon! Watch out for that!

Hit the theaters fast because you must see this awesome action-filled epic!
