Giving Up the V

Being a virgin can be a great thing!

Giving Up the V,' by Serena Robar, is a witty story about a teenager named Spencer Davis who has to go through a chaotic year at her high school, deal with her crazy friends and still manage her virginity at the same time.

Spencer Davis is a junior at her high school with mostly senior friends. There are three guys and two girls in her 'Crew' in which she is the only virgin. Her friends, especially her guy pals, try to reason with her in losing her virginity which they call the V. Spencer is headstrong about her decision until Benjamin Hopkins-the new kid-shows up making Spencer have second thoughts.

Benjamin Hopkins later becomes friends with the 'Crew' and has eyes only for Spencer. Spencer is left with the choice of staying pure or realizing that Benjamin is V material.

'Giving Up the V' is a novel that took my interest. The title alone captivates all attention. The characters in this novel are different and are a breath of fresh air. Spencer is a strong, amiable character that has strong beliefs in staying pure. I like her because of her views of sex. Her friends look at sex as something to do; however, she believes that sex is sacred and should be shared with a special someone.

This is the type of novel that should be read by teenaged girls. It teaches a lesson about sex and love. Many confuse the two, but Spencer gives a thorough definition of the two. Overall, 'Giving Up the V' is a fun story to read and is an important issue today to which teens know to pay attention. Staying a virgin or pure isn't a bad thing, despite what your teenaged friends may think.
