Bells are ringing this week on Gossip Girl as Blair’s wedding day has finally arrived. But as any viewer of this show knows, an event this big on the Upper East Side will never go without a hitch.
Serena’s feelings for Dan are getting harder for her to control. An interesting musical dream sequence at the start of the episode depicts Serena’s uncontrollable attraction to her former boyfriend and his similar feelings for her best friend, Blair. While helping Blair get ready for the ceremony, Serena realizes that she needs to tell Dan that she wants to get back together. But, as Dan tells his father, he doesn’t feel the same way.
As Gossip Girl threatens her former followers with a jaw-dropping comeback—and we get an unprecedented glimpse at the newest blast from her perspective—Blair and Louis host a breakfast buffet for the wedding guests. Louis is overjoyed to make Blair his bride, but his mother warns him that a marriage should be treated more like a business transaction than a loving commitment. Her doubts about Blair becoming the new princess of Monaco are still alive.
Chuck seems to be planning a secret operation with Father Cavalia to ruin the wedding so that both can claim their prizes—a life with Blair and a permanent position in the royal court of Monaco, respectively. But Chuck’s good side continues to prevail, and he even goes so far as to poison the priest so that neither of them will get in the way of Blair’s wedding and her happiness.
As if the situation could not be any more volatile, Georgina has returned, along with her son and someone who we can only assume to be her boyfriend, and is determined to break up Blair’s wedding to get revenge on Blair for sending her to rehab. Her ridiculous plan includes seducing Louis while her assumed-boyfriend (now that’s a weird relationship) films it so Georgina can humiliate Blair. Naturally, her plan fails after Lily and Rufus catch her in the act and demand she leave the wedding.
Blair’s cold feet are clearly more than just pre-wedding jitters. One look at herself in her wedding dress gives her a panic attack, causing her mother to realize how big of a mistake Blair is making. Reminiscing upon her own failed first marriage, Blair’s mother goes to find Chuck and begs him to stop Blair from marrying the wrong man. Mrs. Waldorf’s impassioned speech inspires Chuck, and the two set off for the chapel.
Chuck finds Blair getting ready for the ceremony and once more tells her how much he loves her. He has learned from Serena about the pact that Blair made in church after Chuck miraculously recovers after their car crash and tells her that she is making a mistake. Blair admits that she is still in love with Chuck as well but she cannot be with him and she believes that Louis will treat her well as her husband.
Blair and Louis are finally up at the altar, and just as the minister has asked for any last objections, Chuck appears at the back of the church. Simultaneously, every cell phone in the room goes off. Georgina managed to film Blair’s admission of love to Chuck and Gossip Girl has sent the blast out to everyone. Humiliated, Blair runs from the altar. Blair then accuses Chuck of sending the video to Gossip Girl and begs to Louis to give her a second chance, with a promise that she will never publically embarrass him like that again.
At the reception, Blair and Louis cut the cake as newly-weds. Meanwhile, Serena apologizes to Dan for lying to him about the need to continue their fake relationship. She tells Dan that she still loves him and immediately flees for “maid-of-honor duties.” And Nate flirts with one of the catering waitresses who he recognizes from a party he hosted at The Spectator. Little does he know that this girl is the real Charlie Rhodes, and this can only end badly when the van der Woodsen’s realize who she is and that they have been playing family with an imposter.
Everything seems to be going well until Blair and Louis share their first dance as a married couple. Louis tells Blair that after the scene at the wedding, he only continued with the ceremony in order to keep up appearances. He goes on to say that he will no longer treat her with love and that their marriage is merely a contract that requires her to pretend to be happy in public while he essentially shuns her in private. Blair realizes her horrible mistake, and just as Chuck arrives at the hotel to apologize, she runs away with the only person she can trust—Dan.
Finally, Gossip Girl’s identity is revealed, but it is the last person anyone would expect. Georgina is seen posting Gossip Girl’s new blast after the disaster at the wedding. After five seasons of complete secrecy concerning her identity, I don’t believe the show’s writers would just reveal Gossip Girl’s true identity. In my opinion, Georgina simply took over after Gossip Girl’s earlier downfall and is simply using the platform to continue her now-anonymous revenge on her former “friends.”
Blair’s wedding was just as scandalous as I was expecting it to be, but I was surprised and disappointed that Blair actually married Louis. Especially after her admission of love to Chuck. I’m hoping that as the season progresses she and Chuck will find their way back to each other. Although, I have to admit I wouldn’t mind if Blair and Dan’s relationship moved to the next level either.
