I am not exactly sure why, but young children, especially boys LOVE dinosaurs. Maybe it is their large size or maybe it is the fact that they no longer exist, but there is an innate fascination with dinosaurs between the ages of three and seven.
This book follows a mother Ankylosaurus as she hatches her eggs in a pit and then needs to guard them from predators roaming in prehistoric times.The book tells a simple story, yet it is filled with information about these creatures, like the fact that they lay their eggs in a nest made of sand. It also has vocabulary which will add to the young reader's knowledge such as; armor, troodon and trods.
The illustrations by Mike Bostock are done in earth tones and add to the dinosaur mystique.This book was enjoyed by my Pre-K class of four and five year olds and sparked an interest for more.
